The Federal Trade Commission’s mission is to maintain a competitive marketplace and protect consumers from unfair or deceptive business practices. Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act authorizes the FTC to prohibit deceptive advertising. This includes false or misleading claims about the country-of-origin of seafood, seafood species, sustainability of fishing practices, and similar claims important to consumers’ purchasing decisions.
